How to Care for Braces

If your child is preparing to get braces, it's important that proper care and hygiene is maintained. There are several things orthodontists will recommend to do this. According to the NHS, your child's orthodontic treatment will start when they are around 12 years old. Let's go over some of the top tips to care for braces.

Brushing and Flossing

An essential part of caring for braces is establishing a good brushing and flossing routine. Be sure to brush after every meal, and include flossing in your routine once a day. It's important to be thorough while brushing and flossing by working around brackets and wires. Some orthodontists may recommend a water flosser. This ensures your child reaches spots that are hard to get and dislodges any food that may be stuck. Set reminders for your child so they remember to brush after each meal or snack.

Avoiding Certain Foods

It's important to avoid certain foods when getting orthodontic treatment. Your child should stay away from sticky foods and candies, such as gummy candies and caramels. Other foods can get stuck and should be avoided. This includes foods like popcorn, apples, and vegetables like carrots. These foods can be cut into small pieces so they can be enjoyed without causing damage to the brackets. Following this guideline will make it easier to keep them clean and prevent damage to the wires and brackets.

Keeping Up With Regular Appointments

Be sure that your child is attending all appointments scheduled by their orthodontist, so they can keep on top of care and maintenance. During these appointments, the orthodontist will look for any issues and recommend any changes in care. This also ensures there are no delays in the process and your child can have their brand new smile as soon as possible.

Wearing a Mouthguard

Your child's orthodontist may provide a mouthguard to wear while they are receiving orthodontic care. It is important to use this mouthguard as directed, for example, while your child plays sports. This will ensure that they are protected against injury or damage that could occur.
