One of the first questions a patient will typically ask when scheduling orthodontic care is, “How long will the treatment last?” This is a valid question. Unfortunately, there is no straightforward, one-size fits-all answer. The amount of time a treatment will take is unique to the patient. Here are a few factors that affect the length of time you can expect your orthodontic care to last.
Simple, Uncomplicated Treatments
If you require braces, and the treatment is straightforward without complications, you can expect it to last for about two years on average. However, according to the NHS, treatment can be as long as 30 months (about two and a half years) or as short as six months. Most people fall somewhere in between. The less complicated your needs are, the less time it will take to complete your orthodontic treatment plan. Of course, keep in mind that your orthodontist is the best resource for timelines.
Complex Surgical Corrections
Some patients may need surgical corrections before they can start wearing braces. This process could add additional months to orthodontic care. For example, if you require surgical jaw correction before braces, you may have another two months of treatment ahead of you. In our professional experience, surgical corrections can range from 18 months to 36 months (about three years) of treatment time, but once again, your experience may vary depending on your specific needs.
Time Allotted for Aftercare
Once you are done with your orthodontic treatment, you will still need to visit your orthodontist on occasion to ensure your teeth don't shift back into their original position. Your orthodontist will fit you for a retainer that you must wear while you sleep. There is no end date for the retainer phase of your treatment, but keep in mind that retainers and follow-up orthodontic care are essential for long-lasting results. You worked hard to achieve your smile goals; aftercare ensures you don’t lose momentum. Continue to see your orthodontist and your general dentist for oral healthcare.
When you consider the benefits of correcting your smile and enjoying improved oral health, the time investment for orthodontic care is small.
